SPECIAL BRAINS ABILITY
Special Brains Ability® is a new organization that caters for students who are talented but lack the necessary ability and financial capability to move forward in their academic pursuits. Caring for people living with disabilities comes with many additional expenses and demands which means many homes simply cannot cope with. This initiative aims to provide support to the people living with disabilities (PLWDs) and have the talents to soar higher in their academic pursuits but lacks the means to do so naturally. Special Brains Ability is a new NGO with about 20 students with special needs. It also aims to provide care and educational opportunities for other students in different localities in Nigeria who are also brilliant but are financially incompetent. PLWDs have been neglected for so long, and nobody is considering us in the society even the policymakers have hitherto neglected us in Nigeria. We are confronted with a lot of challenges ranging from getting a good education, job opportunities, transportation, accessing the infrastructure, marital issues etc., this has been our needs in Africa especially Nigeria. I just started a GoFundMe to help with people living with disabilities, who are having a tough time raising funds for their academic pursuits because of their financial constraints and inability. It would mean a lot to me if you checked it out, and considered donating or sharing it on your Facebook Timeline! Even a $5 donation will help me get closer to my goal. Thanks again for considering.
My Challenge, My Story!
James Oluwaseyi Wusu is affectionately known as "Mr. Lecturer" from the days when he started struggling to be a better person after hearing from his parents that they cannot send him to school because they lacked the financial prowess and that he should go and learn a shoe-making because of his disability. I did not blame them because this is what they can afford at that time. But, Wusu took it upon himself that he will never be a shoe-maker but a better person and after his secondary school in 1997, he went to Teachers Training Colleges (TCII) and NCE respectively, wherein he graduated and proceeded for his bachelor degree at the University of Ibadan in 2003. He equally did credibly well and proceeded for his Master degree in 2009 on his own without any help from parents or government. He was unable to pay for his school fees for the first year during his Master degree programme and this really affects a lot in his academics. He managed to get a teaching job where he was able to pay all his outstanding school fees and continue his studies. He finally finished his Master degree (2011) by paying all his school fees through his saved salaries. After working with his employer for about one and half years, he got another job in Republique du Benin as a lecturer and worked for four years. He struggled with his conditions and later got admission at the faculty of computer science and information technology to further his Ph.D. programme at the University of Malaya, Malaysia, almost completing. For the past two years that Wusu is in Malaysia as a Ph.D. student, he does not see anybody to fund his education nor receive any grant from his employer and his new university, he has been resilient in all his ways from the beginning of his stays in Malaysia till close to completion and this has been a challenge to him. He lacks proper accommodation. He struggles to pay his school fees, he sometimes abandons his programme to ghostwrite projects and thesis for his clients and analyze their instruments in order to get money to pay for his school fees, through the proceed he got. He did this for three years during his Ph.D. programmes. Many of Wusu are out there especially in Nigeria and no one is ready to come to their aids. This is one of the reasons I set up Special Brains Ability to help people like this in society. I started with few people living with disabilities with the hope of growing it further.
Solution
I am seeking support to help others who are in this situation in order to provide assistance and give quality educational opportunities for people living with disabilities especially the needy in this group. Donations will fund improvements of this NGO and other things we need to do to make the organization a “center of excellence” in helping people living with disabilities, provide resources to further develop educational programs and opportunities and support training for staff at the centers particularly for students with special needs. Many of the beneficiaries will be given scholarships to continue their studies which would help in reducing their stress in pursuing their lively dreams. This project will also fund some much-needed equipment which will enable the local staff to provide the best level of care possible.
Long-Term Impact
Support for people with disability and development has been identified in Nigeria and as a critical point for the country's social and economic transformation. Supporting local staff to develop their skills and effectively and efficiently immerse themselves into the positions of these young talents in ensuring adequate learning opportunities and environments that will allow access to quality education for these young brains to continue without any hindrances. By offering help and guidance to those families struggling to care for their children with special needs, we hope to reduce the number of students struggling to achieve their target because of disability and lack of finance and give them a new life and relief.
However, this cannot happen without YOUR contribution. I really can't do this without you. There have been so many setbacks to get to this point as a person, and but it has been worth it. Many of PLWDs are out there that needs YOUR help, please help us achieve our dreams. Feel free to give as much as you want or as little as you can - every penny counts!
Appreciation
I want to appreciate all of you for your donations and pray that God will continue to bless you and we promise to carry you along as we progress in our struggle to make life easy for people living with disabilities in Nigeria.
Thank you!
Please, help us give much hope to PLWDs in Badagry Lagos, Nigeria. I am from Badagry, I am starting from here before taking it further.
Thanks
